I spend approximately 10 hours every day playing or researching casinos and bookies online. For me nothing can beat the convenience of a betting app. All bet application data, facts and opinions here are based on my tests, personal opinion and thorough analysis of the mobile gambling scene in 2024.
At SilentBet, we are very aware of how much people like to bet using a mobile phone. It is estimated that close to 4 billion people worldwide use a smartphone, so this should really come as no great surprise.
Combine this with the fact the global online gambling market is worth around $67bn (and rising!), the huge demand for mobile gambling is also likely to shock very few of you.
Bookmakers, being fully in tune with the latest trends, have been desperate to produce the best betting apps on the market as a result. With hundreds of different app options now out there, this has given us plenty to review and rate. As we are committed to doing exactly that, we have been able to produce a high-quality list of sports betting apps featuring our 10 favourites.
What is a Betting App?
Simply put, a mobile betting app is a software application designed to allow players to place bets on a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet. Bookmakers are generally responsible for developing their own betting apps, and they do so because there is such a big demand.
Failure to have a good quality mobile app would see many customers simply heading to another brand to satisfy their mobile gaming needs.
A mobile ‘web app’ is what we would refer to as a mobile-compatible site or simply a mobile site. This is something your mobile browser should automatically load when visiting a particular bookmaker. You can create a shortcut to the web app on your phone’s home screen, but this does not mean it is an app in the true sense of the word.

Where to Download Sports and Casino Betting Apps?
For Apple users out there, more often than not, you will find that a bookmaker’s official betting app is available to download via the App Store. This is because the App Store takes a relaxed stance on gambling apps. They only insist that any app provided is fully licensed, free to download, and is geo-restricted to the locations they can legally operate in.
By contrast, the Google Play store has generally been much more restrictive when it comes to allowing gambling apps. For several years, Google only permitted real-money Android apps in four countries: the UK, Ireland, France, and Brazil. In all other places in the world, any gambling app would only allow you to bet using play money.
Times are changing, however, as in March 2021, a shift in Google Play Store policy saw real money gambling apps come to a further 15 countries. The full list of new additions includes:
- Australia
- Belgium
- Canada
- Colombia
- Denmark
- Finland
- Germany
- Japan
- Mexico
- New Zealand
- Norway
- Romania
- Spain
- Sweden
- the United States
If you live outside these areas, it is still possible to get your hands on an Android betting app, though. We discuss this a little more in Section 5 below, but basically, it involves downloading an Android file (.APK) directly from the bookmaker’s website.
Are Bookmaker Apps Free?
Yes, you should find that any bookmaker app you find is downloadable at no cost whatsoever. Neither the App Store nor the Google Play store permits developers to charge any betting apps fee. Similarly, a bookmaker has no feasible way of imposing a charge if they have an app you access directly from their website.
Even if they could, such a move would be grossly unpopular and a great way of ruining their reputation.
Ultimately, bookmakers want you to place your bets with them, and they want to make doing so as easy as possible. Placing a charge on an app would achieve the exact opposite of this.
Any revenue generated by the potential sale of an app would be minuscule compared to the lost revenue of customers who would take their business elsewhere. So, even if Apple or Google change their policy, you should expect apps to remain free for a long time.
How to Find Only Legit .APK Files to Download
Bookmakers are well aware that some of their players may live in regions where the Google Play Store does not permit gambling apps. This is why many allow players to download their Android app (as an .APK file) through their official website. *Direct links provided by Silentbet as well!
Even some that do operate in non-restricted areas still offer a direct APK file download, most likely to avoid Google Play restrictions.
Downloading and installing an Android app in this way is a simple process that should take no more than a couple of minutes.
In our mobile app guides, we always give you detailed instructions on how to do this. To be safe, you should only download an .APK file through the official source, i.e., the bookmaker website. It is not possible to be completely sure that the .APK file from any other website is legitimate.
Make sure to allow any unknown sources to install apps on your phone via the Settings.
Types of Betting Apps
No matter what type of bettor you are, you will be able to find an app that suits you. As we will explain in greater detail below, there are three main types of apps: sports betting, casino, and poker. Some larger brands will offer all these services within one app, however. Other brands may only specialise in one of these areas ly prefer to have standalone apps for each. A small number of brands also have separate apps for the likes of bingo, but these are so uncommon it is not worth going into much detail about them.
- Sports Betting Apps – The growth of in-play betting has made sports betting apps an even more important tool. Most apps will allow you to quickly and easily bet on live sporting action as it is happening no matter where you are.
- Casino Apps – You will find in today’s market that the vast majority of casino games are now mobile friendly. This means app users can enjoy a very similar, or even an identical, games catalogue as when playing on their desktop or laptop.
- Poker Apps – Poker apps are a little different from the rest as they allow you to go head-to-head with other players. Apps support both drop-in games, as well as scheduled tournaments, so you will never be without a range of tables to sit at.
Real Money Betting Apps – Android vs. iOS
The battle between Android and iOS apps has existed for many years and is showing no signs of calming down. While people are sometimes fiercely loyal to one or the other, there is not much difference from a betting app perspective. Usually, when a brand releases both an iOS and Android app, the app appearance features and functionality are almost identical on each. There are a couple of minor differences worth mentioning, however, as we will now explain.
Firstly, research has found that Android apps, generally, are more likely to suffer from bugs than their iOS counterparts. So, given a free choice between the two, you are slightly more likely to receive a problem-free experience on iOS. Two factors are working against iOS, though. One is that their apps tend to be much larger. The Betfair sports app, for instance, takes up 15MB of space on Android compared to 109.5MB on iOS.
Secondly, you have to factor in that Android apps are easier to access on a budget. It is not uncommon to see apps require a minimum iOS version that came out only a few years prior. Not only do Android apps tend to be compatible with older versions, but the upfront cost of many Android devices is usually lower than that of an iPhone. So, if you are looking at the most cost-effective way of obtaining a betting app, Android is the way to go. If performance is your priority, however, chances are you will be slightly better off picking a fairly recent iPhone.
Pros and Cons of Betting Apps
It can be beneficial to bet using your mobile devices, and it can also be quite limiting. Let’s see whether the advantages of betting on an app outweigh the disadvantages.
- Pros
- Users can easily place their bets from anywhere.
- You can also enjoy a customised betting experience, which has been designed to fit your mobile device.
- Anything offered on the mobile app page can be accessed on your device.
- Cons
- With the mobile betting devices, you will not be able to bet on some sports, since some events have not been devised for mobile platforms.
- High-speed internet connection is also a must.
- Technically, it needs a stronger connection than 3G. For that reason, you may not be able to access some sports.
- Some apps have been designed for specific mobile devices. Check their system requirements before download.
How Do We Rank the Apps?
There are many factors we take into consideration when ranking betting apps. One of the most important factors is performance and reliability. We test apps out ourselves, using them just like a customer would. This allows us to discover problems such as slow speeds, crashing, and other glitches or bugs. Any app failing to provide a smooth and bug-free experience will be marked down substantially.
Additionally, we factor in technical considerations such as ease of download, compatible operating systems, and even the file size in some cases. The features contained in an app are also another key area we examine closely. By this, we are talking about things like live streaming, cash-out options, and in-play betting. The more extras the app comes with, the better.
Finally, some marks go towards the range of available payment methods and their respective limits. Getting money in and out of the app easily and effectively is a substantial part of the entire betting experience. We would also award some bonus points if a bookie runs an exclusive app bonus, but these are rare.
Browser Betting vs. App
Although not every bookmaker has an app, you can pretty much guarantee they will, at a minimum, have a mobile-compatible website. This will usually be more or less a copy of the main desktop site, only a little more compact and touchscreen-friendly. If given a choice between the two, though, should you go down the app route or stick with the mobile site? After all, a mobile site doesn’t require any installation or updates.
Even considering this, the advantages of an app outweigh the fairly trivial drawbacks in our eyes. Although not always the case, apps generally work better than their mobile site counterparts, providing faster and more responsive performance. Apps will also use less mobile data as all the UI content is already installed on your phone and doesn’t need downloading every time you visit the site.
Other advantages of having an app instead of using a mobile site include having quick and customisable push notifications. Thanks to this, an app allows users to keep in touch with the latest promotions and offers instantly. Should you find them too distracting, though, it is easy to turn them off. Finally, some apps include extra features such as fingerprint login and background geolocation.
What types of bets can I place on mobile bookmakers’ sites?
The rapid advance of technology has allowed bookmakers to transfer all their gambling products from their desktop sites to their mobile versions. That is why almost all, if not all, options, features, and functions are now available for mobile bets. We have highlighted the best ones below.
Mobile Sports Betting
Use your phone to bet on football matches, tennis, basketball, ice hockey and other popular sports. Many of the most popular mobile betting sites also feature more niche sports. Some of these are bandy, golf, darts, snooker, water polo, and so on. The markets and odds are the same as the ones on the desktop version of the sportsbook.
Mobile Casinos
Some players are all about casino slots games while others prefer table games with live dealers. No matter the case, mobile casinos are an excellent alternative to land-based ones. Now is your chance to take part in mobile casino tournaments or spin the progressive slots for a chance to hit the big jackpot.
Mobile Poker
There aren’t that many poker platforms out there where you can showcase your skills. Those bookmakers that do offer them have made sure that players can access them on their mobile device as well.
Mobile eSports
eSports are far more than entertaining video games that help you kill the time when you are bored. They are now a full-fledged sport that is worth millions. Consequently, all esports betting sites and gamblers turn to electronic sports. There are plenty of tournaments, unconventional markets and livestreams for all games that you can browse on your mobile.
Mobile Virtual Sports
Virtual sports betting is another novelty that is here to stay. Football matches, horse and hounds races, plus fights are now computer-generated to meet the demand for adrenaline-raising spectacles. The games in the virtual section last only several minutes. This is enough, though, to turn you into a loyal fan. Also, mobile virtual sports are just as thrilling and fair as their results also depend on RNGs.
Other Mobile Betting Options
Apart from the most common betting products outlined above, mobile users can also make the most of some exotic options. Only some mobile bookmakers offer them. These include betting on the weather, politics, TV shows, and many more special bets.
App Bonuses
Some of the betting apps that are available for online users include special bonuses, app promotions or mobile-specific offers. In most cases, though, operators have the same bonus campaigns on both their desktop and mobile platforms. This means that it doesn’t really matter which portal you will access. In the end, you will be able to grab any of the promo offers you qualify for.
Supported Devices
With the advent of mobile technology, betting apps will soon predominate on the iGaming market. Bookmakers aim to meet the demand of their customers. Hence, you can be sure that any app out there will exceed your expectations. Enjoy your wagering sessions on the go via your smartphone or tablet.
History, Present-Day Trends & Future Development
A report published recently from the UK Gambling Commission found that 50% of British online gamblers had placed a bet on their smartphone within the previous four weeks. This figure represented a 6% increase from the previous year and an 11% increase two years before. This rising growth of mobile gambling is not confined to just the UK either, as you will see similar data from other countries across the world.(👉 Source: UKGC)
In-depth research carried out by ivoation revealed an even larger proportion of mobile bets. Their recent Gambling Industry Report, which examined 518 million gambling transactions, found 70% took place on smartphone devices. Given that the rate was as low as 6% in 2012, it is an area that is rapidly expanding year on year. (👉 Source: Newswire)
If you wonder why these figures are higher than those published in the UK Gambling Commission report, bear in mind they do not measure the same thing. The UK report looked at the percentage of players who had played on their mobile while looking at the percentage of transactions undertaken on mobile devices. This strongly suggests your average mobile player places more bets than your average desktop/in-store bettor. This would make sense given that people spend around 3 hours and 15 minutes on their smartphones every day. (👉 Source: Life&Style)
Naturally, the greater demand for mobile gambling has seen an increase in available apps. The increase in apps has, in turn, further fuelled this increase in demand. There appears to be no sign of this slowing down either, especially not with the Google Play Store’s relaxation of their stance on real-money gambling apps.
Betting Apps – Are They Worth It?
There is little question that it is worth downloading the app of any bookmaker you use, even semi-regularly. Why? Because having access to your betting account through your mobile device gives you much more freedom. Any time you want to place a quick bet, or maybe cash one out, you have the option of doing so. Long gone are the days where you need to pop into the local bookmaker or require a PC with a Wi-Fi connection. There is still a place for these, of course, but for the majority of us, mobile apps not only allow us to place bets quicker but also hand us more control.
You might be sitting there saying, well, I can still have the advantages of smartphone betting by using a mobile-compatible website rather than an app. While this is largely true, you have to remember that apps generally provide a superior experience to a mobile site. Given that they are free to download and typically do not take up lots of internal storage, there is little reason not to embrace mobile app betting.
FAQs
Can you find the betting apps on the major app stores?
Yes, all our bookmakers provide apps that can found on the iTunes App store. However, the Android .APK file of most bookies is only available on their official platform and not the Google Play Store.
What if I can’t find the apps on the App Store?
It is possible that you might look for the official app from the app store. If that’s the case, you will need to visit that bookmaker’s official site, and then you will find a link that will take you to the app in question.
Can you make deposits using your mobile device?
Yes, you can easily make deposits to your account by entering your card number or any other financial info. You can also withdraw money safely.
Will the app lag compared to the mobile version of the site?
Apps will generally require less data than mobile betting sites. In that regard, they will run efficiently on a slower connection. All in all, it is highly advised to use 4G or WiFi. The stronger the connection, the more reliable the app will be.
Are there betting apps for all operating systems?
Most bookies develop apps for iOS and Android. Still, some go a step further by offering applications for Windows phones.
Is it safe to use betting apps?
Many new bettors worry about betting via mobile devices. These concerns are unreasonable. Nowadays, apps adopt many security measures. You can rest assured that your personal info will not leak even when using WiFi.
Will my betting app update automatically?
Many bookmakers are constantly tweaking their apps to improve the user experience. When doing so, they will release a new version of their app, usually with some brief patch notes explaining the improvements or fixes made.
What is the best betting tips app?
At SilentBet, we focus on online casinos and bookmakers rather than examining any tipping sites. However, we would say that some of the best tips available come from online websites rather than mobile apps.
How much time should I leave for betting apps download?
The length of time for a download will depend on the size of the file and the speed of your internet connection. In most cases, though, we would expect any app download to take no more than a couple of minutes.
