Hollywoodbets Super League Format

The Hollywoodbets Super League comprises teams from the Sasol Women’s League. The Sasol Women’s League is a second-tier league with two streams of 8-10 teams in every province in SA. Champions from this league qualify for the Hollywoodbets Super League.

The Hollywoodbets Super tournament has 16 teams in total. The league started with 12 teams but increased to 14 in 2020. In 2021, two more teams were added to the league to make it 16.

When the league ends, the champions advance to the CAF Women’s Champions League, which was formed in 2020.

In this league format, the two last teams are relegated to the Sasol Women’s League, while the best two are promoted to the international cup – CAF Champions League. Currently, the league is still taking shape, and thus, there are many changes.

Usually, a typical Hollywoodbets league season takes between 8 and 9 months. The 2023 -24 season began on 4th February 2023, and the finals could be played at the start of 2024.

During each season, numerous rounds of play involve different teams in the league. Primarily, each round of play has a fixed number of matches. However, the number reduces as teams are eliminated during the playoff stages. The matches are spread across the season to get a fair balance. In total, around 240 games happen every season.

  • 2001-2002: The league was called the Sanlam National Women’s Championship. It organised matches in all nine provinces.
  • 2005-2006: The league was called the Vodacom Women’s League
  • 2008-2009: The Absa Women’s League replaced the above. This league became the SAFA regional league at the sub-provincial level.
  • 2009: Sasol Women’s National League gets into a partnership with SAFA and starts running leagues in each SA province. Each winner in this league qualifies for the SAFA Women’s League.
  • 2021-2022: Hollywoodbets partners with SAFA Women’s League and gets naming rights. The league becomes Hollywoodbets Super League.
